A Guide to Your Norwegian Encore Alaskan Cruise Ports: What to Expect and How to Make the Most of Each Stop

Embarking on an Alaskan cruise with NCL is an unforgettable experience, offering stunning natural beauty, vibrant cities, and unique cultural experiences. And what better way than to do it on Norwegian Encore – a ship practically built for Alaksan exploration. To help you make the most of each port, here’s a guide with tips and advice on what to expect and what to do at each destination.

NCL Encore : Built for Alaskan Exploration

Before we dive into the destinations, I wanted to tell you a bit about NCL Encore. The Norwegian Encore is designed to maximize the Alaskan experience, with features that allow guests to fully immerse themselves in the region’s natural beauty. Featuring an expansive Observation Lounge, equipped with floor-to-ceiling windows, provides unparalleled views of the glaciers, fjords, and wildlife that make Alaska so unique. You’ll get incredible views of Alaksa from Encore, whether you’re sailing through Glacier Bay or the Inside Passage. The lounge is a firm favorite and offers a warm, comfortable spot to take in the breathtaking scenery.

Ok, onto the destinations …

Glacier Bay: Nature’s Grand Spectacle

What to Expect: Glacier Bay is a breathtaking highlight of any Alaskan cruise, with towering glaciers, rugged mountains, and abundant wildlife. The ship typically navigates through the bay from 6 AM to 3 PM, with the prime viewing hours between 8:30 AM and noon.

Tips: For the best views, head to the bow of the ship, which is specially opened for this day. The ship performs a 360-degree turn, ensuring that both sides of the vessel have equal opportunities to soak in the scenery. If you prefer a more relaxed viewing experience, consider the seating areas on the sides of the front of the ship on the 8th deck. Be aware that the observation lounge tends to fill up quickly, with some guests even camping out overnight, so plan accordingly.

Seattle: A Day in the Emerald City

What to Expect: Seattle serves as the starting or ending point for many Alaskan cruises, and it’s well worth spending a day exploring this vibrant city. From the iconic Pike Place Market to stunning views of the skyline, Seattle has something for everyone.

Tips: If you only have one day in Seattle, prioritize a visit to Pike Place Market, where you can sample local delicacies and watch the famous fish-tossing vendors. The Underground Tour in Pioneer Square offers a fascinating glimpse into the city’s history, and a trip to Kerry Park provides stunning panoramic views perfect for photography. For transportation, consider using SHA car service—owner Rudy is known for his reasonable prices and reliability.

Juneau: Beyond the Tourist Shops

What to Expect: Juneau, Alaska’s capital, has a downtown area filled with souvenir shops catering to tourists. While it’s easy to get caught up in shopping, the real magic of Juneau lies in its outdoor excursions.

Tips: An excursion is highly recommended here. Although helicopter and dog sled tours are popular, be aware that they are often canceled due to fog. If this happens, don’t worry—alternatives like a seaplane tour with Wings, which flies out to a lodge near a glacier, are equally impressive. The tour includes a salmon or chicken dinner and scenic trails, making for a memorable experience.

Ketchikan: A Short and Sweet Stop

What to Expect: Ketchikan is known for its rich Native culture and picturesque landscapes. However, your time in this port may be limited, as Norwegian sometimes docks far from town, with only a few hours available for exploration.

Tips: With limited time, consider taking the free shuttle into town, but be prepared for long lines on the return trip. Once in town, you have a couple of options: either take a zodiac boat excursion for an adventurous way to see the area or use this stop to do your souvenir shopping, particularly around Creek Street. Remember, you must be in line for the shuttle back to the ship by 11 AM, so plan your time wisely.

Victoria: A Quick Glimpse of Canada

What to Expect: Victoria, British Columbia, is a charming city with beautiful architecture and gardens. Unfortunately, time is limited here, with only about three hours available before you need to head back to the ship.

Tips: The shuttle from the port to downtown costs about $15 per person for a round trip, but given the short distance (1.5 miles), some may find this steep. However, with limited time, it’s worth paying for the convenience. Once downtown, be sure to visit the iconic Empress Hotel and take a stroll around the Government Street and Wharf Street areas. This stop is primarily a legal requirement for the cruise, so it’s a brief but pleasant visit.

Final Thoughts

Each port on your Alaskan cruise offers unique experiences, from the awe-inspiring glaciers of Glacier Bay to the historic charm of Victoria. By planning ahead and knowing what to expect, you can make the most of your time at each destination, ensuring that your cruise is as memorable and enjoyable as possible.
